(EXCLUSIVE) DJ Quik On Kendrick Lamar: He’s going to be in the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame soon.
DJ Quik On Kendrick Lamar, Problem & New Hip Hop Artists
Hands down, DJ Quik (real name David Marvin Blake) is considered one of the primary pioneers in West Coast music. In addition to producing his own music, the Compton native has also worked with artists like Tupac, Problem, Deborah Cox, 8Ball & MJG, and others. During a recent interview at KRUSH Groove, theJasmineBRAND.com correspondent Malikka Michelle, chatted with Quik about his current collaborations, what he’s learned from new hip hop artists and his thoughts on Kendrick Lamar. Check out the excerpts below.
His recent collaboration with Problem:
Problem is persistent. He came to the studio while I was working. He was like, “I got something for that. I’ll be back tomorrow. “ His tomorrow is like 96 hours. But he came back and he came back with fire.
What he learns from new hip-hop artists:
As an old school, they taught me ‘when you too old to dance, get out of the business.’ because we [new artists] black just like you and we know your music and we want to give you something out of your age group. Get on board or move out the way.
How he perceives music today:
I like how more rappers are singing now. They have more melody going on. Joey BadA$$ is hot to me.
His thoughts on Kendrick Lamar:
He is going to be in the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame soon.
The quickest song he ever produced:
Heartz of Men for Tupac Shakur. We did [it] in 6 hours. From start to finish.
