Chance the Rapper – Yeah, I Sampled Your Song, But I’m Not Paying You For It
theJasmineBRAND.com exclusively reports, Chance the Rapper is admitting he sampled a 1979 song in one of his tracks, but argues the man suing him doesn’t even have a copyright to the music.
Here’s the latest: Recently, Chance the Rapper headed to court denying he owes Abdul Wali Muhammed any compensation or money.
The Chicago-bred rapper admits he used portions of “Bridge Through Time” in one of his songs, but denies the 1979 track consists of original material that is copyrighted.
Chance accuses Muhammed of not filing his suit before the statute of limitations ran up and says the songwriter consented to the use of samples being used in “Windows.” He argues the use of the song was fair use and the elements used lack originality and are not protectable by copyright.
He claims Muhammed is not the owner of the copyright for “Bridge Through Time” and lacks standing to file this lawsuit. As a result, Chance wants the entire case thrown.
Here’s the backstory: Earlier this year, Chance the Rapper was sued by Abdul Wali Muhammed over the rapper’s song “Windows”. Muhammed explained he wrote a 1979 song entitled “Bridge Through Time”. He accused Chance of using parts of his track and using them in “Windows” without permission.
The suit claimed Muhammed reached out to Chance’s team in May to let them know his position on the alleged song theft but never heard back. He sued seeking damages plus for all copies of the rapper’s track to be destroyed.
