Gabrielle Union Has Suffered 8 or 9 Miscarriages – The 1st One Was Brutal Because We Told Everyone!
In the past, Gabrielle Union has opened up on about her struggles with trying to become pregnant. After tying the knot in 2014 to NBA star, Dwyane Wade, Union has shared they’ve suffered about eight or nine miscarriages. She described the process of trying to become pregnant as,
my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant — I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.
IVF, or in vitro fertilization, is the medical procedure and process in which an egg is manually combined with sperm outside of the human body. After successful pairing, the embryos are then transferred to the uterus.
Union recently went into detail about her infertility issues detailing why she has decided to come forward, how society rejects women who deem themselves “defective,” the physical toll IVF has caused on her body, and her “brutal” experience with her first miscarriage. When asked about when she first found out about her issues she says,
I initially didn’t know what the issue was. I got off birth control, I got married, and I was ready to start a family. I didn’t think there was going to be any problems, but there was. I was always having these early miscarriages. Some from IVF, some naturally.
After being asked how many she had, she reveals.,
Literally I lost track. It’s somewhere like 8 or 9. The first one was the most brutal, because we told people, and we were so excited! You dream of this moment and those dreams were crushed. Then they happened in succession over the next few years.
When asked how this has affected her physically, she responds,
With IVF, there’s bloating. The bloating can mimic as if you’re in your second trimester of pregnancy. There was ‘bump watch,’ and really, I’m just bloated – trying to get pregnant. But the excitement led to confirmation of pregnancy and there is no baby.
She continued,
When it doesn’t work, it can be absolutely devastating. There are so many women hiding in plain sight, suffering in silence. Nobody wants the world to think you’re defective or less than a perfect woman – or less than capable. There is so much shame and mystery that surrounds fertility issues. That’s why I included in my book because I’m tired of it.
As to why she decided to come forward she says,
Because there is no reason to feel alone. There is no reason to feel you’re SEAL: Team 6 getting to a doctor’s appointment because you’re afraid of what someone is going to say about a medical issue. Which drives people further and further in the shadows. You’re literally suffering in silence, and I’m saying no more, enough!
Union spoke more in depth about her struggles of pregnancy and the suffering silent women in her book released in 2017, We’re Going to Need More Wine. Kudos to her for continuing to share her journey!
