Beyoncé Hires 1st Vogue Black Photographer For Upcoming Cover
Beyoncé Hires 1st Vogue Black Photographer For Upcoming Cover
Here Beyoncé goes, Beyoncéing again! Sources say Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is giving Queen Bey unprecedented control over the upcoming September issue of the iconic fashion magazine. The September issue is known to be the most important cover of all fashion seasons. The last time Beyoncé graced that cover was 2015.
Due to a clause Beyoncé and her team use to keep her in control of the narratives painted around her image, sources alleged that Vogue is contractually responsible to give Bey that control. She will do everything Anna Wintour normally does for each issue: she will choose what she wears, she will choose what captions are written for each photo she takes, and most importantly – she’s hired 23-year-old Tyler Mitchell as the photographer.
He will be the first Black photographer in Vogue’s 126 year history to shoot a cover. Not only is Beyoncé hijacking control of the September issue, she will not be granting them an interview. Ha!
The journalism industry spoke out in full-on praise of this historic first. Former BET host and writer Touré tweeted:
It’s amazing, and embarrassing for them, that Vogue has never before had a Black photographer work on their cover. And Beyonce changed that, not Vogue.

Music journalist Sowmya Krishnamurthy wrote:
Just make Beyonce the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue.
I’ll freelance for her.— Sowmya Krishnamurthy (@SowmyaK) July 30, 2018
Former Teen Vogue editor-in-chief Elaine Welteroth posted excerpts from the Huffington Post article highlighting the announcement:
– all hail queen @beyonce
“Ain’t nothin’ to a boss!” You go, Bey!
