Usher – Songwriter Awarded $44 million Over Hit Single “Bad Girl”
A songwriter by the name of Daniel Marino has hit the jackpot after winning a lawsuit involving Usher‘s single “Bad Girl”. According to reports, Marino, he worked on the “guitar hook, tempo and chord progression” for a song called “Club Girl” in 2001 and 2002. However, he did not receive credit when that song appeared on Usher’s 2004 Confessions album as “Bad Girl”.
Marino then took former co-writer William Guice and Destro Music Productions, owned by co-defendant Dante Barton to court. Usher wasn’t named in the suit.
The judge reportedly sided with Marino. William Guice was ordered to pay Daniel Marino $6.75 million in compensatory damages, and $20.25 million in punitive damages for the song which was featured on Usher’s diamond-certified album. Destro Music Productions agreed to pay Marino $17.35 million. In total, Marino is walking away with a massive $44 million payout.
