Jelani Maraj is catching somewhat of a break while in court, the 39-year-old who has been battling with the aftermath of being found guilty for raping his former step daughter when she was 11. In 2017, a jury found the brother of Nicki Minaj guilty of predatory sexual assault on a child and child endangerment and is facing up to life in prison. In August, Maraj’s mother, Carol, accused the jury for her son’s trial of not abiding by the law, specifically accusing them of discussing the trial outside the courtroom. The judge released a statement on Oct. 18th about the inquiry,
There is a need for the Court to conduct a hearing to determine the nature of the material placed before the jury and whether that material created a substantial risk of prejudice to the defendant.
The defense’s affidavit detailed why they suspect the jurors did not properly present a fair trial to Maraj. Outlining how the influence of their decision during Maraj’s trial was based on the foundation of the media and not evidence presented in court One juror allegedly even said,
“I can’t wait for him to be found guilty.
Seven on the 12 jurors have denied speaking to the media, reviewing blogs, or watching television shows about the trial which would have influenced their decision.
