Erykah Badu Seemingly Defends R. Kelly At Concert, Later Clarifies Comments

Erykah Badu Seemigly Defends R. Kelly at a Chicago Concert: “I’m praying for R.!”

Mama Badu ’bout to teach you a lesson, or so she thought. Singer Erykah Badu is planting her feet on the ground when it comes to her opinions of controversial singer R. Kelly. On numerous occasions, Erykah has seemingly supported and defended R. Kelly amid reports of his sexual abuse and other inappropriate interactions with under-aged women. She insists that she simply takes all sides of a story into account before placing judgement.

However, Erykah recently used her voice to seemingly support R. Kelly again. She performed at the Aragon Ballroom in his hometown of Chicago this past weekend (1/19/2019). The audience both booed and cheered her on after she made the following comments:

“What if one of the people that was assaulted by R. Kelly grows up to be a friend of him? Are y’all gonna crucify them? I mean, how do we do this? It’s just something to think about.”

She continued:

“I’m putting up a prayer right now for R. I hope he sees the light of day if he’s done all these things that we’ve seen on TV and heard those ladies talk about. I hope he sees the light of day and comes forward.”

Concert-goers took to social media in droves that night, commenting on how her rant affected the tone of the show.

Amid the backlash, Erykah Badu issued this statement:

“I love you. Unconditionally.
That doesn’t mean I support your poor choices.
I want healing for you and anyone you have hurt as a result of you being hurt. Is that strange to you ?
That’s all I’ve ever said. Anything else has been fabricated or taken out of context. – eb”
