EXCLUSIVE: Ja Rule & Irv Gotti Join “Growing Up Hip Hop”
theJasmineBRAND exclusively reports, rapper Ja Rule (real name Jeffrey Bruce Atkins) and Irv Gotti (real name Irving Domingo Lorenzo, Jr.) are headed to reality TV. Sources tell us that the pair will allegedly appear on WEtv’s Growing Up Hip Hop NY.
theJasmineBRAND broke the story earlier this month that Growing Up Hip Hop was adding another city to its franchise, New York. Growing Up Hip Hop premiered on January 7, 2016, and chronicles the lives of the children of hip hop legends. Its success has led to the creation of a spin-off Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta. The series was created by Datari Turner and is executive produced by Datari Turner Productions and Entertainment One Studios.
Born in Hollis, Queens, Ja Rule debuted in 1999 with Venni Vetti Vecci and its single “Holla Holla”. From 1999 to 2005, Ja Rule had multiple hits that made the top 20 of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, including “Between Me and You” with Christina Milian, “I’m Real (Murder Remix)” and “Ain’t It Funny” with Jennifer Lopez, which both topped the US Billboard Hot 100, the Grammy-nominated #1 hit “Always on Time” with Ashanti, “Mesmerize” with Ashanti, and “Wonderful” with R. Kelly and Ashanti. During the 2000s, Ja Rule was signed to Murder Inc. Records, formerly known as The Inc. Records and led by Irv Gotti.
Irv is a record executive, DJ and record producer and is the founder of Murder Inc. Records. He is the creator of the BET series Tales. He founded Murder Inc Records in 1997 with his brother Chris.
Growing Up Hip Hop is not Irv or Rule’s first stint at reality TV. Irv had a VH1 reality series called, Irv Gotti: Gotti’s Way.
Two years after he and his brother Chris were acquitted in their money laundering trial, Irv was struggling to bring Murder Inc. back from financial ruin. His series, chronicled his trials and tribulations to get the label and Ja Rule’s career off the ground.
Rule had a MTV docu series called Ja Rule: Follow the Rules.
The show, produced by Queen Latifah, followed the former Murder Inc. artist as he tried to reinvent himself after spending 28 months in prison on tax evasion charges. It also starred his high school sweetheart, Aisha, their three children, Ja’s mother and mother-in-law.
Details about their GUHH storyline have not been revealed. No additional details on who else has been cast for Growing Up Hip Hop NY have been revealed.
