Legendary actor Danny Glover is using his celebrity influence to impact change in a very major way. Glover recently took to Congress to speak before the House to advocate for reparations from slavery.

The idea of African Americans receiving reparations for hundreds of years of slavery has long been a topic of discussion that has yet to yield any type of result—but actor Danny Glover is hoping to change that by stepping up and speaking out about it.

Earlier this week, Glover spoke before the House Judiciary panel in support of a measure that would establish a committee to investigate the true impact slavery has had on the African American community. The measure, known as H.R.40, also calls for the committee to develop a proposal for potential financial or other reparations for descendants of enslaved Africans.

Speaking on how slavery has impacted him on a personal level, Glover stated:

“A national reparations policy is a moral, democratic, and economic imperative. I sit here as the great grandson of a former slave, Mary Brown, who was freed by the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st, 1863. I had the fortune of meeting her as a small child.”

He continued, adding just how important the hearing is, coupled with the long-fought struggle to receive reparations:

“Despite much progress over the centuries, this hearing is yet another important step in the long and heroic struggle of African Americans to secure reparations for the damages inflicted by enslavement and post-emancipation and racial exclusionary policies.”

Glover wasn’t the only famous name that spoke before the House Judiciary, as presidential hopeful and current Senator Cory Booker was also in attendance alongside author Ta-Nehisi Coates. Coates’s written work, The Case for Reparations, is thought by many as reviving the current conversation surrounding reparations.
