Tessa Thompson Lands Role As Marvel’s 1st LGBTQ Superhero In Upcoming ‘Thor’ Film
Tessa Thompson’s Marvel character, Valkyrie is making history in the fourth installment of Thor called Love and Thunder.
Thompson revealed the news during Comic-Con this weekend. She explained,
“As new king [of Asgard], she needs to find her queen. That will be the first order of business.”
Thompson has teased the sexuality of her character in the past. Just before the third installment, Thor: Ragnarok, was released, Thompson said that the director of the movie, Taika Waititi, suggested her character be bisexual like she is in the comic books. Valkyrie’s sexuality wasn’ confirmed in that film, but based on Thompson’s comments, it could happen in the upcoming film. Waititi will also be coming back as a writer and director in Thor: Love and Thunder.

While Thompson will be the first in the LGBTQ community to put on a superhero cape in a Marvel Studios film, this comes shortly after the first openly gay character made its debut in Avengers: Endgame. Interestingly enough, co-director Joe Russo of The Russo Brothers filmmaking team stepped in front of the camera to play the role of a man participating in therapy with Captain America after losing his partner.
Russo said ahead of that film’s release,
“We’ve done four of these films and it was incredibly important to us to have a gay character represented somewhere in one of these four movies. We felt so strongly about it that I wanted to play that character in the film.”
Thor: Love and Thunder will hit theaters on Nov. 5, 2021.
