Michael Che Pays 1 Month’s Rent For 160 Tenants Of His Late Grandmother’s Apartment Complex After She Succumbed To The Coronavirus
The rapidly spreading coronavirus hit home for comedian Michael Che of Saturday Night Live earlier this month. Along with other celebrities like basketball star Karl-Anthony Towns – Michael Che lost a family member to COVID-19. He typed an emotional message to his Instagram followers, announcing the death of his grandmother:
“Hi. I’m Michael Che, from TV. Last night my grandmother passed away from the Coronavirus. I’m doing OK, considering. I’m obviously very hurt and angry that she had to go through all that pain alone. But I’m also happy that she’s not in pain anymore.”
In memory of his late grandmother, Michael Che blessed all of her neighbors – the 160 fellow tenants of her New York apartment complex. He paid all of the tenants’ rent for one month. He gave this comment on Instagram:
“its crazy to me that resident of public housing are still expected to pay their rent when so many new yorkers cant even work. obviously i cant offer much help by myself. but in the spirit and memory of my late grandmother, im paying one months rent for all 160 apartments in the NYCHA building she lived in.”

He continued, calling on figures like Mayor DeBlasio and Sean “Diddy” Combs for help in aiding New Yorkers:
“i know thats just a drop in the bucket. so i really hope the city has a better plan for debt forgiveness for all the people in public housing, AT THE VERY LEAST. ps deblasio! cuomo! diddy! lets fix this! page me! – che”
