NFL: We Were Wrong For Not Listening To Players Earlier & Encourage All To Peacefully Protest
NFL Finally Admits They Were Wrong For Not Listening To Players & Now Believes Black Lives Matter
Today (June 5) NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell released a video via the NFL’s official Instagram account. Goodell began with,
“It has been a difficult time for our country, in particular black people in our country. First my condolences to the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and all the families who have endured police brutality. We, the National Football League, condemn racism and the systematic oppression of black people. We, the National Football League, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest. We, the National Football League, believe black lives matter.”
Goodell has been under fire since the NFL’s fanbase divided in 2016 after Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem to protest police brutality. This newfound perspective comes less than an hour after the NFL posted a montage of black players demanding the NFL specifically admit their wrongs, condemn racism and admit black lives matter. Goodell continued,
“I personally protest with you and want to be part of the much-needed change in this country. Without black players, there would be no National Football League.”
Though many consider this a huge admission on behalf of the NFL, there are mixed reactions in the comments. Countless fans continued applying pressure, questioning where Kaepernick’s contract was while others call for more black NFL coaches and general managers. Super Bowl champion,
Deion Sanders left a supportive comment for Goodell:
”Good dude whom I know personally has a heart of Gold and cares about what we care about”
The black community has been calling for action, stating apologies from organizations are no longer acceptable. Some question the sincerity of the video as it is a direct answer to the video posted by the NFL players. Some fans sarcastically applauded Goodell’s statements. Colin Kaepernick has not responded at this time and surprisingly, neither has his girlfriend, radio personality, Nessa Diab. Do you think the NFL is sincere? Tell us in the comments.
