Rev. Al Sharpton Announces March On Washington In August, George Floyd Family To Lead Movement
Rev. Al Sharpton announced that he is organizing a march in Washington D.C on August 28, which happens to be the 57th anniversary of the original March On Washington.
While Rev. Al Sharpton delivered his eulogy at George Floyd’s memorial on June 4, the civil rights leader announced,
“On August 28, the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington, we’re going back to Washington. We going back to Washington, Martin [Luther King III]. That’s where your father stood in the shadows of the Lincoln Memorial and said, ‘I have a dream. We’re going back this August 28 to restore and recommit that dream [of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.] to stand up, because just like in one era, we had to fight slavery. Another era, we had to fight Jim Crow. Another era, we dealt with voting rights. This is the era to deal with policing and criminal justice. We need to go back to Washington and stand up, black, white, Latino, Arab, in the shadows of Lincoln and tell them this is the time to stop this.”

Martin Luther King III
Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III will be planning and organizing the march and will not only have the march in Washington D.C, but in other regions of the country as well. Sharpton also mentioned that the movement will be led by the Floyd family and other families that have been impacted by police brutality.

The announcement was made at George Floyd’s memorial on Thursday (June 4) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The memorial for the slain Floyd was attended by politicians, celebs, and civil rights activists. Mr. Floyd’s brother Philonise Floyd also gave a eulogy detailing the brothers’ upbringing and the describing his brother as a
“gentle giant”.
"Everywhere you go and see people, how they clinged to him, they wanted to be around him. And George, he was like a general. Every day, he walks outside, there would be a line of people…that wanted to greet him."
