Queen Naija On Confronting Colorism: We Need To Address It At The Right Time
While racism and police brutality are at the forefront of nationwide protests, singer Queen Naija possibly suggested that now isn’t the right time to tackle colorism.
She responded to a Twitter user who wrote,
“I want people to stop acting like darker toned people can’t be colorist either.. and that there area lot of them out here!”
Queen Naija replied,
“Colorism does exist in both light and dark people. We need to address exactly what colorism is, but just at the right time.”

She has since deleted the tweet, but it has since garnered mixed reactions.

Queen Naija herself has been accused of being a colorist. She addressed the claims in an interview in 2018 and said,
“I did a video with my ex-husband, and we was talking about bullying. And on that video, I said I always got bullied by, like, Black girls, and I mentioned ‘nappy-headed.’ They used to pull my hair, things like that. And those (dark-skinned girls) were the only kind of girls I would get bullied by.”
She added,
“Maybe it’s something I shouldn’t have said. But, I feel like I’m a Black woman, too. I see Black women speak on other Black women all the time. They can call each other nappy-headed this and that — but you won’t call them colorist because they’re [dark-skinned].”
Do you agree with Queen Naija about when to address colorism? Let us know in the comments.
