Donald Trump Defends Confederate Flag: We Can’t Cancel Our History + Compares It To Black Lives Matter
While many are calling for the removal of the Confederate flag around the nation, President Donald Trump is defending it.
During an interview on “Fox News Sunday” which aired today (July 19th), Donald Trump was asked about the racial tension that comes along with the flag, that is commonly associated with slavery. He said,
“It depends on who you’re talking about… when you’re talking about.”
He continued,
“When people proudly had their Confederate flags they’re not talking about racism. They love their flag, it represents the South. They like the South … I say it’s freedom of many things, but it’s freedom of speech.”
He added,
“I’m not offended either by Black Lives Matter, that’s freedom of speech. You know the whole thing with cancel culture — we can’t cancel our whole history. We can’t forget that the North and the South fought.”
He also referenced Civil Rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton when he discussed the topic of renaming military bases with racial connotation.
“I don’t care what the military says. I’m supposed to make the decision. Fort Bragg is a big deal. We won two world wars — nobody even knows General Bragg. We won two world wars. What are we going to rename it? You going to name it after the Reverend Al Sharpton?”
Interestingly enough, Donald Trump has taken issue with Black Lives Matter after the phrase was painted in front of his New York City hotel recently.
