Viola Davis Did NOT Buy The House She Was Born In, Clarifies Previous Comment

Update #2 (Aug. 13th): It turns out Viola Davis didn’t buy the home she was born in after all. The “How To Get Away With Murder” actress has set the record straight in her Instagram comments, after alluding to the notion that she purchased the home to celebrate her 55th birthday.

She wrote,

“Uhh….contrary to websites….I do not ‘own’ above house. I ‘own’ my STORY!! Too abstract I guess.”

Original Story: Actress Viola Davis celebrated her 55th birthday Tuesday (Aug. 11) by gifting herself with an instrumental piece of her history.

The Grammy, Tony, and Emmy award-winning actress shared with her 5.8 million Instagram followers the significance of her newest real estate purchase and revealed it was the home she was born in, in Saint Matthews, South Carolina.

“The above is the house where I was born August 11, 1965. It is the birthplace of my story. Today on my 55th year of life….I own it….all of it.
“May you live long enough to know why you were born.”

Viola Davis isn’t just making history in her personal life. Her Vanity Fair cover shoot was also a history-making moment as it was the first time a black photographer shot the cover since the magazine’s inception.

On Juneteenth, she told the magazine about her desire for change amid the increasing awareness of systemic racism and oppression, as well as colorism and the role it plays in Hollywood today.

When I was younger I did not exert my voice, because I did not feel worthy of having a voice.

She continued, accrediting her mother and her sisters for lifting her out of “the hole”:

“They looked at me and said I was pretty. Who’s telling a dark-skinned girl that she’s pretty? Nobody says it.”

Viola Davis also touched on one of her biggest roles in the 2011 film The Help, revealing she felt she she “betrayed” her people by being in the movie.

“There’s no one who’s not entertained by The Help. But there’s a part of me that feels like I betrayed myself, and my people, because I was in a movie that wasn’t ready to [tell the whole truth]. [It was] created in the filter and the cesspool of systemic racism.”
