Oprah Winfrey & Steven Spielberg Team Up For ‘The Color Purple’ Reboot, ‘Black Is King’ Director Blitz Bazawule To Direct
The Color Purple is getting a remake.
Oprah Winfrey, who made her feature debut in the original film, is set to produce the reboot along with Steven Spielberg, who directed and produced the first movie.
Icon Quincy Jones will also be on the all-star team of producers and Black is King director Blitz Bazawule will lead as the director. His movie The Burial of Kojo got the attention of The Color Purple reboot team.
Oprah Winfrey said:
“We were all blown away by Blitz’s unique vision as a director and look forward to seeing how he brings the next evolution of this beloved story to life.”
He expressed his excitement about joining the team on Instagram:
“So honored to reimagine Alice Walker’s classic novel ‘The Color Purple’ for a new generation. Beyond grateful to have Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Quincy Jones and Scott Sanders as my Producers alongside Warner Bros Studios. Get ready for an AMAZING journey.”

Oprah Winfrey also saluted his role in the remake on Instagram.

Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones, and Scott Sanders also produced the musical for Broadway.
The Color Purple is based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel which was turned into a motion picture in 1985. The movie has grossed more than $140 million, and the stage musical adaptation has reportedly grossed more than $350 million.
No release date for the remake has been announced.
