LeBron James To Pay Convicted Felons’ Fines So They Can Vote In Upcoming Election
Celebrities and athletes are using their platform to make sure all voices are heard in the upcoming presidential election on November 3rd.
With the 2020 election just 41 days away, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has reportedly teamed up with the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition to send text messages to Florida residents to help them find anyone who is struggling to pay off outstanding fees and fines due to a felony conviction, ultimately helping them become eligible to vote. In 2018, Florida passed a law that gave felons the right to vote, only if all fees, fines, and restitution were paid in full.
“More Than A Vote” will be donating $100,000 to the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition’s fund for residents in Florida. The NBA star has been active on social media, pushing to support Black voters, and even offering opportunities to become a poll worker.
Billionaire and former mayor of NYC, Mike Bloomberg recently raised more than $16 million to also help convicted felons in Florida become eligible to vote.
The Florida Rights Restoration Coalition states that Mike Bloomberg’s fundraising has reportedly paid off fees for 32,000 felons so far.
