Tiffany Haddish Turned Down Hosting Gig For 2021 Grammys Pre-Show, Says She Would’ve Had To Cover Her Own Expenses

Award season is upon and the Recording Academy has apologized to Tiffany Haddish after she revealed she was offered a hosting gig for the Grammys pre-show, but would have had to pay her own expenses.

Tiffany Haddish, who is nominated for best comedy album for her Netflix project Black Mitzvah, revealed during an interview with Variety Wednesday (Dec. 9th) that she turned down the opportunity because she would have had to pay for her own wardrobe, hair, and makeup for the three-hour event.

She said:

“All of that would have to come out of my pocket. I don’t know if this might mean I might not get nominated ever again, but I think it’s disrespectful.”

Tiffany Haddish continued:

“I was like, ‘The exposure is amazing but I think I have enough. I appreciate you guys asking. And as much as I appreciate the honor of being nominated, that’s not OK.’ This is something that needs to be addressed. How many other people have they done that to? It’s like a guy asking you on a date but telling you that you have to pay for it.”

Shortly after her comments made headlines, Recording Academy Interim President and CEO, Harvey Mason Jr., issued an apology on Instagram Thursday morning (Dec. 10th) and said he had no idea the academy didn’t plan on paying for her expenses. He added:

“To me, that was wrong. I’m frustrated by that decision. It was a lapse in judgement, it was in poor taste and it was disrespectful to the creative community. I’m part of the creative community. I know what that feels like, and it’s not right.”

He went on to say:

“I apologized to her personally and I apologized to her from the academy, I expressed to her my regret and my displeasure about how this went down and about how this was handled. Again, I want to say Tiffany, we are sorry and thank you for allowing me to speak on it.”
