Birdman Brags About Cash Money Records Profiting Off Its Rappers’ Masters: We Generate $20 Million To $30 Million A Year
Birdman recently opened up about how his well-known label, Cash Money Records, continues to make good money by owning various artists’ masters.
During an April 30th interview with YouTube’s WALLO267, Birdman (real name Bryan Christopher Williams) began discussing his ownership of various rappers’ masters, or the rights to their work and recordings.
After describing what it means to own an artist’s master recordings, Birdman begins to describe how he profits off of master recordings. He states:
“We license the music, I just started letting people sample my s**t. So yeah, it’s a gang of ways you can make money with your masters. We generate $20-30 million a year just on our masters.”
Despite making “$20-30 million a year” on masters alone, Cash Money Records has seen its fair share of rappers part ways with the label. Lil Wayne and Drake, who were affiliated with the label for long periods of time, respectively parted ways in 2018 and 2019. Juvenile, Jay Sean, and Tyga also departed from the label after some time.
However, the criticism against Birdman has also come from artists unaffiliated with Cash Money Records, including Rick Ross. Rick Ross released a song–“Idols Become Rivals”–where he explicitly refers to Birdman by name. Shortly after acknowledging “[r]ap game, so much f**k s**t done,” he states:
“Catholic record labels, n***as gettin’ raped, boy/
Birdman’s a priest, moans in his synagogue.”
In spite of what others say, however, it looks like Birdman is still making money off his artists’ masters–and has no qualms about sharing just how much!
