Urban One Founder Cathy Hughes Refutes Her Depiction In Wendy Williams’ Biopic: I Don’t Know What’s Wrong With Wendy’s Memory
Earlier this year, Wendy Williams released both a documentary and biopic on her life–and it looks like Cathy Hughes is coming out to claim that she was inaccurately portrayed in the latter!
Cathy Hughes is the founder of the media company Urban One, which was originally Radio One, and was professionally linked to Wendy Williams in the earlier days of her career. Specifically, Cathy Hughes was Wendy Williams‘ boss while she worked at Washington, DC’s WOL radio station. According to Williams‘ biopic, Hughes was unpleasant to work with, as she was depicted as someone who would chain-smoke in the studio and look down on Williams.
However, Cathy Hughes recently set the record straight during her recent appearance on The Ricky Smiley Morning Show. During her appearance, Hughes mentions “You know, Wendy got her start with me,” to which co-host Da Brat inquires:
“That was you smoking that cigarette [in the biopic], wasn’t it?”
In response, Hughes claims:
“That was who it was supposed to be. I don’t know what’s wrong with Wendy’s memory because as much as I smoked, I have never ever smoked a cigarette in any of my studios.”
She also refuted Williams‘ allegations of Hughes looking down on her, stating:
“Wendy was talking about I threw her out like trash. That’s not true. I helped Wendy get a better-paying job.”
Cathy Hughes goes on to point out that Wendy Williams is actually part of the Urban One family once again. This is on account of Williams‘ association with the Cleo TV cable network, which is owned by Hughes’ Urban One.
Wendy Williams has not yet commented on Cathy Hughes‘ statements.
