Chris Rock Speaks Against Cancel Culture: When Everybody Gets Safe, Things Get Boring
Is cancel culture to blame for “boring” entertainment? Comedian Chris Rock says yes.
During a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, Chris Rock called out cancel culture as the reason that entertainers aren’t funny.
He said earlier this week,
“When the audience doesn’t laugh, we get the message. You don’t really have to cancel us, ’cause we get the message. They’re not laughing, our feelings hurt. When we do something and people aren’t laughing, we get it. I don’t understand why people feel the need to go beyond that.”
He continued,
“Honestly to me it’s a disrespect. It’s people disrespecting the audience. You think you know more than the audience. The audience knows more than everybody, okay?”
While Chris Rock empathized with cancel culture, he said it’s the reason people are playing it safe, leading to boring content.
“Some things don’t need to be said, some people need to be looked out for, I definitely understand that. But not letting comedians work is… What happens is everybody gets safe. And when everybody gets safe and nobody tries anything, things get boring. I see a lot of unfunny comedians, I see unfunny TV shows, I see unfunny TV shows, I see unfunny award shows, I see unfunny movies, ’cause everybody’s scared to make a move. That’s not a place to be.”
He concluded,
“[We should] have the right to fail. ‘Cause failure is a part of art. It’s the ultimate cancel. But you got a place where people are scared to talk that’s not, especially in America… but you gotta make adjustments.”
