Toni Braxton and Mary J. Blige won’t be going head to head on July 4th.

A promo of what appeared to be an upcoming Verzuz evet made its rounds yesterday (June 22nd).

But fans speculated if it was real considering Verzuz didn’t include it in the upcoming lineup or announce it on any of its official social media pages.

One fan tweeted Verzuz and asked,

“So… is there any truth behind this @tonibraxton & @maryjblige @verzuzonline happening on July 4th? I need answers! #ToniBraxton #MaryJBlige #VERZUZ”

Verzuz clarified,

“So… is there any truth behind this @tonibraxton & @maryjblige @verzuzonline happening on July 4th? I need answers! #ToniBraxton #MaryJBlige #VERZUZ”

It also shared a GIF of Kermit the Frog typing quickly with the caption,

Still, it doesn’t mean the matchup could never happen. Last year, Toni Braxton said the only artists she would go up against is Mariah Carey or Mary J. Blige.

She told Missy Elliott for Interview magazine,

“Yeah, I can’t. I’m like, ‘It would have to be me, Mariah [Carey] or Mary J. [Blige] or something.’ Us girls from the ’90s. But no, I haven’t put it on the register to do it yet. I know they’ve called you, too.”
