‘Lovecraft Country’ Actor Courtney B. Vance Questions Series Cancellation Following Emmy Win: In My Mind, It Doesn’t Make Sense
‘Lovecraft Country’ actor Courtney B. Vance is questioning the series cancellation after winning an Emmy. Over the weekend the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies took place in Los Angeles, California. During the prestigious event, Courtney B. Vance, who plays George Freeman on ‘Lovecraft Country’, won an Emmy for outstanding guest actor in a drama series. Following his win, Courtney B. Vance, 61, spoke on how it felt to win an Emmy despite the hit series being dropped by HBO. He said that he was,
“very very happy but at the same time very sad because of [the death of] Michael [K. Williams] and because we’re not still doing the show.”
He added,
“In my mind, it doesn’t make sense, something as successful as that show was that the powers that be couldn’t figure it out.”
He continued,
“I’m sad for audiences that we don’t get to see, like ‘Game of Thrones’, don’t get to see seven, eight years of following these characters and learning more about the time period and learning about our people and our struggles and where [showrunner] Misha’s [Green] mind was going to go. So that’s very painful for me as a fan and me as an actor.”

Later on in the evening, Vance continued to express his disappointment in HBO’s decision to pull the plug on ‘Lovecraft Country’.
“I don’t understand it; it doesn’t make sense, it doesn’t make sense to fans and that’s all who matter. We set everyone up and then we don’t deliver for whatever reason and I’m tired of it, I’m tired of that scenario. They can find a way to make a ‘Game of Thrones’ but not a ‘Lovecraft Country.’”

‘Lovecraft Country’ also won for sound editing for a comedy or drama series at this weekend’s Creative Arts ceremonies as well. The series received 18 Emmy nominations.
As previously reported, fans were shocked when news broke this past July that the popular HBO series ‘Lovecraft Country’ would not be returning for a second season. ‘Lovecraft Country’ is a horror drama and sci-fi series about the adventures of a young black man who travels across the segregated 1950s United States in search of his missing father.

The show’s creator Misha Green reacted to the series being canceled via her Twitter account.
