2022 Grammy Awards Postposed Until Further Notice

As a boatload of new variants of the Coronavirus has begun sweeping through nations worldwide, the Grammy Awards have decided to officially postpone their annual award show for the second year in a row.

As you may or may not remember, the 2021 Grammy Awards, planned to be held on January 31st, 2021, had to be pushed back 6-weeks to March 14th, after a reported spike in the coronavirus outbreak.

This year the 2022 Grammy Awards, which was also supposed to be held on January 31st, 2022, has recently been postponed until further notice. There is no new date announced yet, but Variety’s sources claim that Grammy executives are looking at hosting the star-studded show around April or May. The annual award ceremony was set to be held at Los Angeles’s own Crypto.com Arena, formerly known as the Staples Center. However, given scheduling issues, including the Grammy’s 10-day-plus venue lockdown before the event, the Grammy’s may have to be moved to another location this year. 

The postponement comes after many artists have canceled their appearances or complained about the potential health hazards that the event may cause. The enclosed area could be a breeding ground for the airborne virus.

The Recording Academy and CBS issued the following joint statement:

“After careful consideration and analysis with city and state officials, health and safety experts, the artist community and our many partners, The Recording Academy and CBS have postponed the 64th annual Grammy Awards show. The health and safety of those in our music community, the live audience and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly to produce our show remains our top priority. Given the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant, holding the show on January 31st simply contains too many risks. We look forward to celebrating Music’s Biggest Night on a future date, which will be announced soon.”

Unlike the previous year’s award show, the Grammy’s does not plan on dialing back its usually lavish event. Instead, The Recording Academy and CBS want to bring back the usual Grammy’s experience, with performances, a live audience, and the return of full Grammy-week events, which were canceled in 2021.

After looking at the completed Grammy nomination list posted in November 2021, it makes sense why Grammy executives would want to go back to its usual glitz-and-glam atmosphere. Notable artists such as Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, H.E.R., Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, Taylor Swift, Kanye West, BTS, Silk Sonic, Saweetie, Baby Keem, and many more are nominated for awards this year. A list like that will surely cause a massive turnout for the company, which already makes millions of dollars off the event, annually.
