Serena Williams Calls Out New York Times For Mistakenly Using Photo Of Her Sister, Venus Williams: “You Can Do Better”
Serena Williams isn’t too pleased with The New York Times!
The 40-year-old professional tennis player is calling out the newspaper for accidentally using a photo of her sister, Venus Williams, in a story instead of her. The story was about how Serena Williams raised $111 million for a new venture capital fund, “Serena Ventures.” Reportedly, the new venture capital firm already has an investor with a portfolio of 60 companies. About 75% of portfolio company founders that her firm is bringing in, come from historically underrepresented backgrounds.

While the incorrect photo did not appear in the online version of the story, it did appear in Wednesday’s (Mar.2) newspaper. Serena took to Twitter on Wednesday to address the error.
“No matter how far we come, we get reminded that it’s not enough. This is why I raised $111M for Serena Ventures. To support the founders who are overlooked by engrained systems woefully unaware of their biases. Because even I am overlooked. You can do better, New York Times.”

The New York Times caught wind of Serena Williams’ message and quickly apologized for the error. Their business account tweeted,
“This was our mistake. It was due to an error when selecting photos for the print edition, and it did not appear online. A correction will appear in tomorrow’s paper.”
