Morris Day Says That Prince’s Estate Has Forbidden ‘The Time’ From Performing Under Their Name

Morris Day and Prince’s estate are at odds.

Morris Day of “Morris Day & The Time” alleged that Prince’s estate banned him from performing under the name. Day has led the group since 1981, but the singer is accusing the Prince estate of stirring conflict because the artist is deceased. In an Instagram post, Day wrote:

“I’ve given 40 years of my life building up a name and legacy that Prince and I came up with. A name that while he was alive, he had no problem with me using.”

He continued:

“I Literally put my blood, sweat, and tears into bringing value to that name. In fact, he booked me on several tours, and many jam packed nights at paisley park, under the name Morris Day & The Time. Not once ever saying to me that I couldn’t use that name configuration.”

He went on:

“However, now that Prince is no longer with us -suddenly, the people who control his multi million dollar estate, want to rewrite history by taking my name away from me, thus impacting how i feed my family.”

He added:

“So as of now, per the Prince Estate, I can no longer use Morris Day & The Time in any capacity.”

The estate responded by claiming that they already had “amicable discussions” about the matter.

“[We were] surprised and disappointed to see his recent post. The Estate is open to working proactively with Morris to resolve this matter. [Morris Day’s post] is not entirely accurate.”

Day returned to Instagram and addressed their response:

“BEWARE!! The Estate will try and discredit my claim.. They are now claiming that what I said in the media regarding my name, ‘is not entirely accurate’. So tell me, which part is not accurate? I’m listening.”
