WNBA’s Brittney Griner Now Allowed To Communicate W/ Loved Ones Via Monitored Emails Amid Her Russia Detainment
WNBA star Brittney Griner has been able to communicate with fellow players via email during her detainment in Russia.
According to reports, Brittney Griner’s agent created an email account that allows loved ones and friends to write to her. Brittney Griner has received hundreds of emails sent by players, including letters. The correspondence must be reviewed by Russian officials, then delivered to the 7x All-Star’s jail cell by her lawyer.
However, the process isn’t a walk in the park. Reportedly, the emails are printed out and delivered sporadically in bunches to Griner, as she doesn’t have access to the email account. The Phoenix Mercury player will either write a response on paper and her lawyers will take a photo of it or she’ll verbalize a response if she doesn’t have any paper.

Many WNBA players wanted 31-year-old Griner to know she has not been forgotten, such as L.A. Sparks forward Amanda Zahui B., who wrote to Griner a few months ago. Surprised to hear back from her friend, the players’ latest correspondence arrived from Russia last week. Griner ended their latest email exchange by signing it “From 42 to 42” — in reference to the Sparks player switching her uniform number to 42 to honor Griner.
In addition to Griner receiving emails, Phoenix Mercury player Diana Taurasi sent a handwritten letter to her fellow teammate. According to Griner’s agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas, the letters have been a way for the two time olympic gold medalist to stay connected to her WNBA family.
As previously reported, on February 17 Brittney Griner was stopped and detained at an airport near Moscow after Russian authorities claimed the hooper was carrying vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis in her luggage. The 6-foot-9 center has been detained for 105 days and faces drug smuggling charges that carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
