Brittney Griner Pleads Guilty to Russian Drug Charges: I Did Not Want to Break The Law
New details have surfaced in the ongoing Russian detainment of WNBA star Brittney Griner.
According to reports, Brittney Griner, 31, pleaded guilty today (July 7) to charges of smuggling drugs into Russia. Brittney Griner reportedly told the court that she did bring cannabis products into the country, where it is considered illegal, but she did so “inadvertently” because she was packing quickly and had no intentions of purposely breaking the law. She said,
“I’d like to plead guilty, your honor. But there was no intent. I didn’t want to break the law.”
She added,
“I’d like to give my testimony later. I need time to prepare.”

As previously reported, Brittney has been wrongfully detained in Russia since February. Russian authorities claim they found vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis while searching her luggage at a Moscow airport.
On July 4 the two-time Olympic medalist and seven-time WNBA All-Star penned an open letter to President Biden asking for him to intervene and help bring her and other detained Americans home.
Cherelle Griner confirmed on July 6 that she finally received a phone call from the president and Vice President Harris.
