Kim Burrell Reveals She Was Shot At After Her Performance On ‘The Ellen Show’ Was Canceled Due To ‘Homophobic’ Remarks

Gospel singer Kim Burrell recently reflected on the aftermath of being banned from The Ellen Show.

While interviewing on the We Sound Crazy podcast, the musician revealed she was shot at and received death threats following Ellen Degeneres giving her the boot. Back in 2017, Kim Burrell made headlines after Degeneres famously canceled her performance on the popular daytime TV talk show. Days before the appearance was set to happen, a video of Burrell seemingly condemning members of the LGBT community surfaced. The now-deleted FB live caused Degeneres, a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, to cancel Burrell’s performance.

Discussing the aftermath of the entire situation, the gospel artist stated:

“The cancel culture thing increased right about then, I hadn’t heard of it before….I was chosen to be put in that position…..I know God had a divine purpose for me….But I have not shared that I was shot at,”

She continued:

“I had helicopters flying over my home. I had constables, sheriffs living outside my house for seven days.”

The often controversial pastor went on to share that fellow singer Stevie Wonder bought her airline tickets during the time in an attempt to keep her safe until things blew over. However, Burrell says that to this day she still receives death threats behind the incident. She continued:

“It’s still going on. I still get death threats….after five years, six years, people still call and give hate mail….it is still happening heavily.”

At the time, Burrell and fellow musician Pharrell were set to appear on Ellen to perform their collaboration song from the Hidden Figures soundtrack. Though the Christian media personality never made the appearance, the “Happy” artist did, and he spoke about Burrell’s comments, stating:

“There’s no space, there’s no room for any kind of prejudice in 2017 and moving on. There’s no room….I love her, just like I love everybody else….We all have to get used to everyone’s differences and understand that this is a big, gigantic, beautiful, colorful world and it only works with inclusion and empathy. It only works that way.”

The video that caused the controversy was reportedly from one of Burrell’s FB live sermons where she said:

“To every person that is dealing with the homosexual spirit, that has it, I love you because God loves you. But God hates the sin in you and me, anything that is against the nature of God. I’m called to do what God called me to do, and that’s it, and I do it with passion.”

Burrell vehemently denied any wrongdoing but did later apologize for the remarks. During her recent interview, the singer went on the share that she received a call from Jamie Foxx years later, claiming to have called Ellen at the time in her defense. The singer says while Pharrell also called her – following his appearance on the show – she was disappointed in the way he handled it.
