Update: 21 Savage Clarifies Comments Claiming Nas Is No Longer Relevant, Says He Would ‘Never Disrespect’ A ‘Legend’ + Nas Responds

Update: (Nov. 15, 2022): 21 Savage is making it clear that he meant no disrespect with his latest controversial comments about fellow rapper Nas. The “Jimmy Cooks” artist took to his Twitter account yesterday evening (Nov. 14) and wrote,

“I would never disrespect Nas or any legend who paved the way for me y’all be tryna take stuff and run with it.”

Despite 21 Savage initially saying Nas is no longer relevant, it seems that the O.G. rapper has no ill feelings surrounding the harsh comment. Earlier today (Nov. 15) he took to his IG and shared a new photo of himself. He captioned the post,

“[laugh emoji] LOVE” 

Original Story: (Nov. 14, 2022): 21 Savage seems to think that the only thing keeping fellow rapper Nas relevant is his fanbase.

During a recent Clubhouse conversation, rapper 21 Savage gave his thoughts on the current state of Nas’ career and if it still holds as much weight as it once did.

If you didn’t know, Nas’ sixteenth studio album, King’s Disease III, was released on Friday (Nov. 11). While discussing the New York rapper in a virtual room titled ‘Is Nas The Greatest Rapper Or What? #KD3,’ 21 Savage didn’t hold back with his opinion.

Although he made it clear that he wasn’t one to dissect the next person’s artistry, along with the rest of the digital attendees, he debated that the Illmatic hitmaker’s relevancy was non-existent in 2022.

Savage started off with,

“It be cool ’cause it be like discussions and sh*t, but, in reality, though, it’s like… we gotta stop tryna treat music like it has to be dissected, and ‘Oh, it needs to go this way,’ ‘They need to do this, they need to do that.’ ‘Cause, at the end of the day, when we get older–or even at our age now–when we go listen to old sh*t, we don’t listen to it because they did this or they statistically sold this, or they dropped every week, or they didn’t drop every week. We listen to it ’cause we like it and it puts us in a good mood, bro. Like, that’s all it’s for, bro.”

He then continued by arguing that the number of Hip-Hop pioneers in this era who could still ride the wave of longevity is few and far between.

“N*ggas saying all of that longevity sh*t; n*gga name somebody else from back then that can drop an album right now.”

It’s important to note that the Glock in My Lap rhymer didn’t take away from Nas’ credibility in the game. However, he did indicate that he felt that the only reason Nas could still release an uber-successful project is because of his long-standing supporters and not because of how popular he is.

“Technically, anybody can [drop an album]. Like, all them n*ggas could drop one if they wanted to. What y’all saying [is] relevant, though? I don’t feel like he’s relevant. I just feel like he got a fanbase.” 

Later in the chat, when asked to clarify what he said, Savage added,

“No, he’s not relevant; he just has a loyal-a** fanbase. He just has a loyal fanbase and he still makes good-a** music. But what’s y’all’s definition of relevant, bro?”
