Jerrod Carmichael Receives Mixed Reviews After Joking About Whitney Houston’s Death While Hosting The Golden Globes Awards
Jerrod Carmichael is seemingly under fire for using Whitney Houston’s death as a punchline.
On Tuesday night (Jan. 10) Jerrod Carmichael took the stage at the 80th annual Golden Globes Awards in Beverly Hills. The comedian, who is the first Black person to host the ceremony, seemingly took aim at the Golden Globes with his controversial jokes. Throughout his monologue, Jerrod Carmichael joked about how last year’s television screening was axed due to the controversy surrounding a lack of diversity among the voters. The 35-year-old announced:
“I’ll tell you why I’m here. I’m here because I’m black.”

That wasn’t the only remark that left viewers talking. The stand-up comedian stunned the audience after showcasing his dark humor while making a joke surrounding the passing of Whitney Houston. As previously reported, the late singer died at 48 in 2012 after accidentally drowning from a drug overdose in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton hotel, which is where this year’s Golden Globes took place. Carmichael said:
“They wanted me to shout out the venue that we’re in.”
He continued:
“So, we are here live from the hotel that killed Whitney Houston, the Beverly Hilton.”
He added:
“That’s very exciting.”

Twitter users had mixed reviews surrounding Carmichael’s joke. One user claimed that the comedian was calling out the hotel for failing to get Houston proper medical care on time.

However, other users described the joke to be terrible and wished the Golden Globes would’ve chosen another host.
