After the junior reserve forward, who appeared in six games this season, was detained, the university issued a statement revealing that Darius Miles is no longer on the team. According to Tuscaloosa police Captain Jack Kennedy, Jamea Harris was shot and killed in a vehicle early Sunday morning (Jan. 15) in the Strip off University Boulevard near campus. Miles, 21, and Michael Lynn Davis, 20, were both charged with capital murder. Reportedly, a capital murder charge was placed on the suspects because the death involved shots fired into a vehicle.
In a news conference, Captain Jack Kennedy said:
“At this time, it appears that the only motive was a minor altercation that these individuals had with the victim as they were out on The Strip.”
According to Captain Jack Kennedy, Darius Miles did not have any previous ties to Jamea Harris. He added that the driver in another vehicle, in which Jamea Harris was a passenger, approached campus police saying that someone had shot into the car and he fired back. One of the suspects was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. After the incident, the university released a statement that read:
“The University of Alabama’s utmost priority is the safety and well-being of the campus community. We are grieved by the incident that occurred near campus last night and extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends.”
Miles was captured being escorted into a law enforcement vehicle as he emotionally exclaimed to someone:
“I swear … I love you more than you imagine!”
