Malia Obama — ‘Swarm’ Series Co-Creator Shares How Malia ‘Brought A Lot To The Table’ In Her TV Writing Debut: ‘Some Of Her Pitches Were Wild As Hell’
Malia Obama has made her screenwriting debut on the new series “Swarm.”
While “Swarm” was created by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers, Malia Obama made a big contribution to the show. According to reports, Malia Obama co-wrote the series’ fifth episode “Girl, Bye” alongside showrunner Nabers.
Nabers recently spoke on how Malia Obama’s ideas helped bring the overall storyline together. She said,
“[‘Girl, Bye’] is probably one of the wildest episodes. I think it’s going to surprise a lot of people. It’s pretty dope. I’m really proud of it.”
Nabers continued to praise the former first daughter.
“Some of her pitches were wild as hell, and they were just so good and so funny. She’s an incredible writer. She brought a lot to the table… She’s really, really dedicated to her craft. I’m really excited for everyone to get to know her work, and the work of the writers on a show.”

Dominique Fishback–who played the lead role of Dre–shared similar sentiments.
“It was nice to know that she was going to be on it. And that we had different voices and different generations involved in making the show. It was pretty cool to meet her. I think she’s dope.”
For Chloe Bailey–who also stars in the series–this marked a reunion between her and Malia Obama.
“It was always so fun and exciting getting to run into Malia and Sasha years prior… So, having that relationship with Mrs. Obama and getting to meet her daughters, I was always so honored and they always felt like my family in my head.”

She continued,
“So, getting to see Malia now, us both growing into who we are as young women and making our own mark, her as an incredible writer and me making my mark as an entertainer and an actress, it was really fun. I was just so excited when I actually got to see her on set. I’m just so proud of her.”
While discussing the Amazon series last year, Donald Glover praised Malia Obama, calling her,
“An amazingly talented person…She’s really focused, and she’s working really hard.”

He continued:
“I feel like she’s just somebody who’s gonna have really good things coming soon….Her writing style is great.”
“Swarm” is a psychological horror drama that follows stan Andrea “Dre” Greene and her unhealthy infatuation with a fictional music artist by the name of Ni’Jah. Proudly wearing the badge as a member of Ni’Jah’s fandom “The Swarm,” it isn’t long before Dre’s fascination with the phenomenon evolves into murder, madness, and mayhem.
