Monica Explains Why She Believes She’s ‘The Most Forgotten’ In The Music Industry: ‘I Really Have Never Won Any Awards’
R&B singer Monica seems to be feeling underappreciated by the music industry.
During a recent speaking appearance, the songstress shared that she often feels snubbed at award shows even though she’s a record-breaking artist.

Monica, 42, expressed her thoughts during a live recording of the Lebron James‘ produced talk series ‘The Shop: Uninterrupted.” Taking to the stage as a guest panelist along with fellow musician Quavo and NBA star Lou Williams, Monica kicked off by discussing the motivation behind her start and continuation in music. The “Angel Of Mine” singer explained that no matter what our expectations may be, all of our lives have a purpose. For her, she once felt that because she had broken several records in her career that would be reflected in the amount of awards she received. However, the industry seems to have taught her otherwise. She said:
“I was able to really enjoy my career because I didn’t have any expectations. I was not looking at stats, I was not worried about awards. I’m actually a person that for all the records I’ve broken, I really have never won any awards. I’m really the most forgotten, if you think about it.”

“I’m pretty much the underdog, but I sit very comfortably in it because I can still go where I want, do what I want, live how I want. But when I say that, I am often forgotten, I was hosting the Soul Train Awards, was nominated for 5, 3 of my songs in one category and still lost. But I went out to eat and kicked my regular sh*t after. I was not bothered because that’s not what I do it for…That is really my point when I say that oftentimes I’m forgotten in those spaces.”
Though Monica feels she’s overlooked, her career is certainly one of the more notable in the R&B music industry. Throughout her career, the songstress has had multiple songs go #1 on the Billboard Top 100 Chart, including singles such as “Before You Walk Out of My Life,” “Don’t Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days),” “The Boy Is Mine” (with Brandy), “So Gone,” and “Everything to Me.” Additionally, Monica has sold over 5 million records in the US alone over the span of her career.

Despite her hits, however, it does seem the musician has a strong argument regarding being passed over at award shows. Reportedly, Monica only holds a single Grammy Award for “Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals” for her contribution to “The Boy Is Mine,” though she is a four-time nominee. She’s also earned one award from the Billboard Music Video Awards, BET Awards, and Soul Train Music Awards.
In totality, Monica has been nominated for awards nearly 40 times, though she’s taken home five wins.

Still, the singer has continued to carry a loyal fan base and maintains a stellar career. Elsewhere in her appearance on “The Shop,” Monica attributed her sustenance to her authenticity, telling the hosts:
“Honestly, for me, I think what sustains me and keeps me connected is the authenticity.”

“Imma always be me. I’m always the same. You’re never going to see me in a different environment and get a different person. And that allows me to not just reinvent myself, but to evolve.”
