According to reports, Denzel Washington is set to reunite with his “Training Day” and “Equalizer” director Antoine Fuqua for an upcoming drama film based on Hannibal, the real-life Carthaginian warrior. The official logline about the project says the movie is,
“based on real-life warrior Hannibal, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders in history. The film covers the pivotal battles he led against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War.”
Hannibal — a historical figure — is known for attacking Italy from the North while riding a war elephant. As a skilled military general, Hannibal led the Carthaginian troops to key victories against the Romans, which allowed him to obtain most of southern Italy for 15 years. Hannibal was ultimately defeated by the Romans after they invaded North Africa.
Reportedly, Hollywood creators and entertainers have been intrigued by the story of Hannibal for some time. Denzel Washington will produce the film, which is based on a script by John Logan and “Gladiator” filmmaker Ridley Scott. The Oscar winner joined Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel earlier this year.
