Tupac Could Win His 1st Grammy 27 Years After His Untimely Death For Hulu Docu ‘Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur’

Tupac Shakur is still making history long after his death.

Rapper Tupac Shakur has officially received his fifth posthumous Grammy Award nomination. It was announced on November 10 (2023) that the famous lyricist could finally win the prestigious award in the category of “Best Film” for the FX five-part docu-series “Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur,” currently streaming on Hulu.

After his untimely death in 1996, Tupac Shakur was nominated in the categories of Best Rap Album for “All Eyez On Me” and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for “How Do You Want It” and “California Love,” both in 1997. He was nominated again in 2000 for his hit song “Changes” in the Best Rap Solo Performance category. Unfortunately, Tupac Shakur did not win those Grammy Awards. However, that could change in February (2024) when the award recipients are announced at the live Grammy Awards show at the Crypto.com Arena in Tupac’s city of Los Angeles.

This year seems to have shaped into a pivotal year for the late actor. We previously reported on June 1 (2023) that Pac was receiving a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame which was made official on June 7 (2023).

In late September of this year (2023), gang member Duane Keith “Keefe D” Davis’ was arrested as a suspect in the activist’s murder case, a case that was unsolved for nearly thirty years. As previously reportedTupac’s sister Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur spoke out regarding the arrest, stating,

“This is no doubt a pivotal moment. The silence of the past 27 years surrounding this case has spoken loudly in our community. It’s important to me that the world, the country, the justice system, and our people acknowledge the gravity of the passing of this man, my brother, my mother’s son, my father’s son. His life and death matters, and should not go unsolved or unrecognized, so yes, today is a victory but I will reserve judgment until all the facts and legal proceedings are complete.”

Since the surprising arrest was made, Keefe D has pleaded not guilty and will reappear in court for a status check on November 7 (2023).

Tupac’s name continued to make headlines as actress and wife Jada Pinkett Smith recalled her close, longtime friendship with Tupac in her memoir entitled “Worthy.” Jada dropped a lot of bombs in her book, including allegations that Tupac proposed to her from prison and confessing that she considered that iconic artist her “soulmate.”

Tupac’s history-making ability even after death is not surprising to those who loved the artist from the time he was introduced to the world in 1991. Like Michael Jackson, Prince, and Whitney Houston, his music and legacy will live on forever. Rounding out the year with a Grammy nomination for a project that included not only Tupac himself but also former member of the Black Panther Party, Afeni Shakur, his mother, could be considered Tupac’s best year yet.

Reportedly, Shakur is competing against two other late artists – David Bowie for “Moonage Daydream” and Little Richard for “I Am Everything.” Bowie died following a battle with cancer in 2016, and Little Richard died in 2020.
