‘A Different World’ Sequel Centered Around Whitley & Dwayne’s Daughter Is In The Works At Netflix

Another late 80s/early 90s sitcom has found its way to the 21st century.

A Different World sequel is in the works at Netflix! According to a report from Deadline, the forthcoming series will follow the life of Dwayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Whitley’s (Jasmine Guy) daughter as she attends her parents’ alma mater, Hillman College. Casting has yet to be announced but conversations with original cast members to make an appearance have reportedly taken place.

The new project comes from writer/executive producer Felicia Pride, who is no stranger to working on a successful TV show. She’s credited as a writer and producer for Grey’s Anatomy and has a writer’s credit for Queen Sugar. In addition, Felicia Pride is listed as the supervising producer for Bel-Air’s (reimagined version of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) Season 3, which is set to air on Aug. 15.

Other talented people working on the project are executive producers Gina Prince-Bythewood, Debbie Allen, Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, and Reggie Bythewood. It’s only right to bring them in as they all worked on A Different World, which ran for six seasons, from September 1987 to July 1993.

The original show is a spin-off of The Cosby Show and initially followed Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) as she found her footing as a freshman at the fictional HCBU Hillman College. However, after she left following season 1, the focus shifted primarily to Whitley Gilbert-Wayne, Dwayne Wayne, Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor (Dawnn Lewis), Winifred “Freddie” Brooks (Cree Summer), and Ronald “Ron” Johnson (Darryl M. Bell).

Full details on the A Different World sequel and its release date have yet to be released.
