Jussie Smollett Reveals He’s Spent $3 Million Fighting His Legal Battle Over Alleged Hate Crime Hoax
Jussie Smollett is speaking out about the costly fight to clear his name in connection with the 2019 hate crime hoax he allegedly staged.
In a recent interview, the Empire star shared with Entertainment Tonight he has poured nearly $3 million of his own money into appealing his 2021 disorderly conduct conviction.
He stated,
“I want to have all of these things in my life, and I don’t want to have a felony on my record for something that I didn’t do.”
He continued,
“That’s what we’re fighting for. It would be easier if I had in fact done this to say that I did it. I wouldn’t have spent almost $3 million of my own money. I wouldn’t have had a trial.”
If you can recall back in 2019, Jussie Smollett made headlines after claiming he was the victim of a hate crime in Chicago, alleging two men attacked him and tied a noose around his neck. However, it was later revealed that Smollett had allegedly staged the attack, resulting in his conviction for felony disorderly conduct and ongoing legal battles over his sentencing.
Despite his challenges, Jussie Smollett has continued to focus on his work, recently directing, writing, and starring in The Lost Holliday, which also features Vivica A. Fox.
