Morgan Freeman is dropping gems about how his legendary voice became so deep and captivating!
In a recent appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Morgan Freeman explained that his voice wasn’t always as full and rich as it is today. He shared,
“I grew up in the South. My voice was maybe a half octave higher than it is, and I had a very thick Southern accent, but when I was taking acting classes at LACC, the voice instructor just tore it down and fixed it.”
Morgan Freeman went on to offer some practical advice for achieving a relaxed, powerful tone: “There are ways to do it. Relaxation is the key. You do that by yawning a lot, opening the mouth wide, and that kind of relaxes the throat.”

He then demonstrated a few vocal exercises—including the chicken wing technique—which helps to open up the chest.
During the interview, Freeman also gave a shoutout to his inspiration, #SidneyPoitier, and offered some wisdom to aspiring actors, stating that the craft is “easy,” but landing roles is tough. His advice? Keep “moving forward.”
