‘The Cosby Show’ Star Geoffrey Owens Says He’s ‘Still Struggling’ After He Quit Trader Joe’s Gig
Geoffrey Owens is speaking out about his financial struggles.
Known for his role as Elvin Tibideaux on The Cosby Show, Owens made headlines in 2018 when a photo of him working at Trader Joe’s went viral.
He recently shared on The Big Tigger Morning Show that, at first, the response to the viral photos was negative, with people job-shaming him. However, soon after, he was overwhelmed with support and encouragement from all over the world.

However, Owens admitted to still facing financial difficulties:
“I still struggle to make a living. Even today, right now, as we speak, I still struggle every day to make my ends meet.”
He explained that his residuals from The Cosby Show were never substantial, as he appeared in only “maybe 20% of shows.”
Owens also spoke about the toll the invasion of privacy took on him, leading him to quit the Trader Joe’s gig:
“It was strange because someone had been in the store taking pictures. I wasn’t going to be able to handle that kind of scrutiny and attack on my privacy.”

While Owens turned down a $25,000 donation from Nicki Minaj, choosing to donate it to charity, he has found work in acting gigs, including The Haves and the Have Nots and Poppa’s House on CBS.
