Essence Atkins Calls Working w/ The Wayans Family ‘Incredibly Liberating’
Essence Atkins is praising her nearly 30-year relationship with the Wayans Family, calling it “incredibly liberating.”
In an interview with PEOPLE, Atkins, who stars in “Poppa’s House” alongside Damon Wayans Sr. and Damon Wayans Jr., reflected on her long history with the family, including her work on “A Haunted House,” “Dance Flick,” and “Marlon.”
She shared,
“What makes it work for us is the love, respect, and trust that we have with one another… We all show up to do the work, to tell the best stories, to find ways to augment the laughter and surprise one another.”

Atkins also emphasized the family’s collaborative environment, saying,
“They don’t require a hierarchy… They just want to know, ‘What do you think is funny?’ … It’s an ‘us’ place. It’s a ‘we’ place. And that’s a rare thing in this business.”
