TikTok Reportedly Planning ‘Immediate’ Shutdown For U.S. Users Amid Federal Ban

According to reports, TikTok is set for an immediate shut down for U.S. users this Sunday (Jan. 19) unless the Supreme Court steps in to block the federal ban.

Sources speaking to The Information say TikTok won’t allow existing U.S. users continued access to the app, but will instead implement an immediate blackout and display a pop-up message directing users to a website with details about the ban, along with an option to download their personal data.

The pending shutdown follows a law requiring ByteDance to sell its U.S. assets by January 19, 2025, or face a nationwide ban over concerns that the Chinese government could force the company to share sensitive data about U.S. users.
