Google Calendar Removes Cultural Events Like Pride & Black History Month
Google Calendar users are voicing frustration after noticing the removal of events like Pride Month, Black History Month, Indigenous People Month, Jewish Heritage, Holocaust Remembrance Day, and Hispanic Heritage.
According to a Google product expert, these events were removed as part of changes to the default holiday list.
One user called the move “shameful,” accusing the platform of “capitulating to fascism.” Despite previous complaints about the presence of these events, their removal has sparked backlash.
Google explained the change, stating that for over a decade, it collaborated with timeanddate.com to display public holidays and national observances.
In recent years, the Calendar team added a broader set of cultural moments globally, but maintaining hundreds of events consistently proved unsustainable.
As a result, starting in mid-2024, Google reverted to showing only public holidays and national observances, leaving users to manually add other important events.
Is this a surprising move?
