Paul Piece Says Black Athletes May Prefer To Date White Women Because They’re More Appreciative, Apologetic, & ‘Don’t Mind Being Held Accountable’

During his guest appearance on the Truth After Dark podcast, the former NBA star was asked why many athletes—namely NBA players—date outside their race. The host bluntly asked:
“Is it because they’re easier?”
In response, Pierce replied:
“I honestly think that maybe they appreciate more and they apologize more….They don’t mind being held accountable.”
The clip has since gone viral, sparking immediate backlash. Critics slammed Pierce for reinforcing what they see as tired stereotypes about Black women being “difficult,” while others defended his right to speak from personal experience. But the conversation quickly evolved into something bigger.
One report noted that a 2022 analysis found just 28.3% of married Black NBA players had Black wives, while 41.7% were with non-Black partners.
But outside the NBA bubble? It’s a different story. Among high-earning Black men (those making $100K+), a whopping 83% are married to Black women. So why the gap?
Some say it comes down to proximity, highlighting that players often spend their formative years in white-majority spaces. Others point to societal messaging that has long devalued Black women while elevating non-Black women in the media and pop culture.
What are your thoughts on the topic? Do you feel there’s some truth to Paul Pierce’s take? ?
