Sherri Papini, Woman Who Blamed Fake 2016 Kidnapping On Two Hispanic Women, Speaks Out In New Doc: ‘Haven’t You Ever Lied?’
Sherri Papini, the California mom who faked her own kidnapping in 2016, is back in the spotlight. In a new documentary, Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie, she claims there’s more to the story than what the public knows.

In a newly released teaser, Papini looks straight into the camera and asks,
“Haven’t you ever lied? Have you ever lied in your history of existence? And then has that lie been blown up and broadcast around the world?”

Papini made headlines when she disappeared for three weeks in November 2016. She later reappeared on the side of a road, claiming she had been held captive by two masked Hispanic women. She said they chained her up, branded her with the word “Exodus,” before letting her go.
—————————
That story was quickly debunked. Authorities found out Papini had been staying with her ex-boyfriend, James Reyes. He was never charged with a crime and has denied any involvement in a kidnapping.

Papini was arrested in 2022. She pleaded guilty to making false statements and mail fraud and was sentenced to 18 months in prison, but served less than a year.
—————————
Now, she’s changing her story. In the documentary, Papini says she lied because she was afraid of her ex and didn’t want her husband to find out about the emotional affair.

Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie airs as a two-night event on May 26 and 27 on ID. It will also stream on HBO Max.
