Carrie Underwood Faces Backlash Over Reaction To ‘American Idol’ Contestant Jamal Roberts Winning Season 23
Jamal Roberts made American Idol history as only the second Black man to ever win the singing competition, but the internet is convinced not everyone was thrilled.
Fans quickly noticed that Carrie Underwood, who returned as a guest judge for the Season 23 finale, appeared less than enthusiastic during Jamal’s final performance and his big win. While Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan gave Jamal a standing ovation, Carrie stayed seated, only joining in after the others.
Though she later posted a glowing message on social media, some felt it came off as damage control. She wrote alongside a picture of her and Jamal:
“Congratulations to the newest winner of @AmericanIdol !!! I’m so proud of Jamal Roberts and all he has accomplished this season and I can’t wait to see what mountains he climbs next! He’s going to do great things!”

But viewers weren’t buying it, especially after watching clips where Carrie appeared distant and reserved compared to her co-judges.
Her critics also brought up past controversies, including her performance at Trump’s inauguration and comments comparing herself to Beyoncé, which have long sparked accusations of her being out of touch with Black audiences.
What are your thoughts? Does it seem Carrie wasn’t supportive of Roberts, or is the internet overreacting?
