Jussie Smollett Calls Chicago Police ‘Villains’ + Insists Hate Crime Story Has ‘Never’ Changed Ahead Of Netflix Comeback
Jussie Smollett is standing firm on his account of the 2019 incident that derailed his career, calling the “villains” the two people who assaulted him, the Chicago Police Department, and then-Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
During a recent chat with Variety, he questioned, “Could it be that they had just found out about the missing minutes and the missing tape from the murder of Laquan McDonald? Could it be that the mayor helped hide that?” he asks.
Smollett says his story “has never” changed, while “every single other person’s story has changed multiple times.” He adds, “I have nothing to gain from this.”
Now promoting a Netflix documentary, “The Truth About Jussie Smollett?,” the former “Empire” star maintains he was attacked by two masked men who hurled racist and homophobic slurs, not the Nigerian American brothers who testified against him.
“All I can say is, God bless you, and I hope it was worth it,” he says.
As he works on his new album “Break Out” and returns to TV, Smollett admits public perception still weighs on him, but he’s ready to keep pushing forward.
