Uoma Beauty Founder Sharon Chuter Found De@d Months After Filing Lawsuit Claiming She Was ‘Pushed Out’ Of Her Company

Very sad news.

Nigerian born Sharon Chuter, the trailblazing founder of Uoma Beauty, has sadly passed away at age 38.

According to the Los Angeles Medical Examiner, Sharon was found deceased on a residential patio in Los Angeles on August 14. Her cause of death is listed as “deferred,” meaning it remains under investigation. No additional details have been made public at this time.

Her passing comes amid an ongoing legal dispute tied to her exit from Uoma Beauty. In February 2025, Sharon filed a lawsuit against MacArthur Beauty (which took over the brand following its 2023 closure), venture fund BrainTrust, and Settle Funding. The suit alleged that BrainTrust “took control of Uoma’s operations and ultimately pushed Ms. Chuter out of her operational roles,” and that operations were halted during her medical leave, despite her intention to return by July 2023.

In May 2023, Sharon had publicly stepped down as CEO following a serious health scare. “I lost 10kgs in one week, doctors thought it may be stomach cancer but luckily it wasn’t and I’m back ok,” she shared in a candid Instagram post. “Albeit forced into medical leave, which was the true story of my sabbatical.”

Despite her untimely death, Sharon’s legacy in the beauty industry remains powerful. Known for her fearless commitment to diversity, transparency, and cultural representation, she founded Uoma Beauty with the goal of creating space for all identities, launching one of the most inclusive shade ranges (51 shades) on the market.

In 2020, she launched the global #PullUpOrShutUp movement, calling on brands to disclose how many Black employees they had in leadership. She later followed up with the Make It BLACK campaign, which both reclaimed the meaning of the word “Black” and raised funds to support Black-owned businesses and founders.
