T.D. Jakes’ Lawsuit Sparks AI Scandal: Judge Hits Opposing Lawyer With $5K Fine Over Fabricated Filings
Bishop T.D. Jakes scored a legal victory when a federal judge in Texas penalized attorney Tyrone Blackburn for submitting court documents containing fabricated legal citations generated by AI.
This ruling came amid a defamation suit Jakes filed against Duane Youngblood, who alleged misconduct by Jakes in the 1980s. Jakes denied the claims and accused Youngblood of trying to extort him for $6 million before going public.
The judge determined that Blackburn’s briefs contained deliberate misquotes and bogus references, and even after being called out, he refiled similarly flawed documents instead of retracting them. Blackburn admitted using AI to draft the documents and apologized, citing unfamiliarity with the technology—but the court rejected that defense.
As punishment, the judge:
• Levied a $5,000 fine against Blackburn (to be paid in installments)
• Revoked his pro hac vice status, barring him from practicing in that district
• Stipulated that any future attempts by Blackburn to appear in that court must include the sanction order
Jakes’ team had sought over $76,000 in legal fees but did not receive that full award.
